Who we're here for
G’day, my name is Jono Hart.
I reconnect pubs with their purpose, post the pandemic.
That purpose is far more than selling drinks and meals - it’s to create camaraderie and care within the community.
When pubs closed their doors due to COVID19 only to reopen them with stringent new rules, many felt much more isolated than ever before. Many questioned their sanity and state of mental health.
Now with the cost of living and the current rental crisis people need mental health support more than ever before.
I'm here to assist publicans and their staff in identifying when a patron is suicidal, so they can take action and intervene, saving a precious life and in doing so get the community back on track.

This is done through different projects such as The Suicide Prevention Checklist, The Pubs Supporting People Days and The Pub Whisperer - providing suicide prevention numbers for patrons in a crisis and the Recognise and Respond suicide prevention training program from Black Dog Institute.
It's true, Great People Make Great Pubs. But what makes a great person these days? Well, the no. 1 leadership trait in the world right now is considered to be "kindness". We all need to be kind. Especially to those down on their luck. Especially when suicide rates say 9 people a day kill themselves in Australia. Around the world that figure is a death to suicide every 40 seconds. |
Furthermore, the stats show us that around the world up to 69% of people who suicide have alcohol in their system (a review conducted by Cherpitel, Borges and Wilcox).
My Story
In 2017, I travelled outback Australia with my family of 5 filming some of Australia’s most iconic pubs on the journey and setting up the website greataussiepubs.com.au.
Most had great memorabilia. Many had masses of tourists. And many retained that authentic community feel. That open-minded approach which accepts each of us as we truly are.
More than just the centre of the community, the greatest ones opened their doors and their hearts to anyone. They made isolation disappear.
Who Am I
I’m a former award-winning print journalist, radio announcer, established environmental entrepreneur and a mental health survivor - having battled suicide ideation, depression and psychosis on my journey to better mental health today.
The proud father of four beautiful children I am addressing the following questions:
The creation of The Pub Whisperer came about due to my lived-experience of mental illness and the fact that when COVID came i realised other peoples mental health would deteriorate too.
In w024 I was discharged from the medical system as no longer having a medical illness and no longer requiring medication.
It's a comeback story and 1/2 and I hope that anyone reading this, or who knows someone, suffering with a mental illness or suicide ideation, that their comeback is possible too, with the right help, seeking answers to how they got themselves in a space of unwellness in the first place.
My Why noe is to assist humanity and the planet in healing from past trauma.
For me, suicide prevention in pubs is a great way to continue this journey.

I’m a former award-winning print journalist, radio announcer, established environmental entrepreneur and a mental health survivor - having battled suicide ideation, depression and psychosis on my journey to better mental health today.
The proud father of four beautiful children I am addressing the following questions:
- do pubs have a role to play in suicide prevention in the community?
- do we need to redefine the Aussie larrikin – from one who says “she’ll be right, mate” to one who asks “are ya alright, mate?”™. So we can grow together, as a community, instead of locking our problems away which may lead to overwhelm and possibly suicidal thoughts.
- Do we continue to bottle up our feelings, emotions and frustrations? Or can we as a community be vulnerable enough to share these things with one another, over a drink, to help find solutions.
