The Tumba Hotel - Tumbarumba, NSW
The Tumba Hotel, located in the heart of Tumbarumaba, New South Wales is a unique pub which has, in recent years, become a hub of the community due to tragedies within the township.
When fires ravaged the area in late 2019 it was new publicans Sue and Greg Scanlon and their trusted team that assisted the township of 1800 locals in ensuring the community and local emergency workers were fed for the battle ahead.
Later that next year they assisted the town in pulling through during floods and when Covid19 struck they too had a plan for making sure the community had meals to eat.
Formerly run by the Heinecke family (many in the family line still drink and eat at the pub) it's well over a century old and is located on the town's main street, The Parade. It's one of two pubs in the area, and one of four pubs in the town's history. A history that included a gold rush in the mid 1800s, which helped establish the township.
Today, The Tumba Hotel boasts 18 clean rooms and a communal bathroom, with fabulous Asian and Italian meals served daily and some of the best schnitzels you will find in a long while.
Out the back is an RV-friendly area with toilets where caravaners can set up for a short stay.
In April 2021, The Tumba Hotel was a host of the Pubs Supporting People Day which drew a small crowd to raise funds for mental health research and solutions through Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation and The Just Listening Community. Greg and Sue were happy to put out the donation bucket - and the township obliged - a bucket which also continues to help raise funds for Legacy and those in need within the community.
Due to the fires, the area was hurt by local unemployment. But it's a township that has absolutely come together, with the pub as the hub of all that needed healing.
Situated 5 hours from Sydney, almost 5 hours from Melbourne and roughly 3 hours from Canberra, Tumbarumba is surrounded by the Snowy Mountains, expansive vineyards, lush pastures and crystal clear streams brimming with trout. Known for its mountain climate, award-winning vineyards, grass-fed beef and lamb, blueberries, raspberries and the plantation forestry which creates plenty of employment for the region through the timber mill located just out of town.
Paddy's River Falls is a short scenic destination where you can get up close to this beautiful waterfall for little effort (a short climb up and down stairs) and the township itself features two supermarkets, cafes, a bakery, banks, a hospital, library, museum and mechanics as well.
The yearly TumbaFest in February draws around 5000 people to the region to sample the best of the area and enjoy live entertainment. The Tumabrumba Rodeo will be held again in January next year is the oldest rodeo in NSW (and third oldest in Australia), celebrating its 75th birthday in 2022.
The township also has NSW's first Rail Trail, which opened its tracks to the public in 2020.
