Late last year I received a reply to an email from Graeme Cowan who helped Gavin Larkin create R U Ok? Day back in 2011. Looks like we’re on the right track folks! When things go sour and you're down on your luck, where do you go when your home or a mate's place doesn't feel like an option? The pub. You can have a drink, relax, have a moan, meet other people and maybe even get lucky. But what happens when the pub has problems itself? Post the Carona Virus Pandemic of 2020 we've seen many pubs shut up shop. Restrictions have meant its been hard to trade, in some cases hard to trade at all. In 2021 we need to make the pub great again – and inspire community to feel the love, feel the camaraderie in the community. Which is why, from here on in, a Great Aussie Pub is an inclusive one. One which opens its hearts and doors to anyone. Doing that is not only great for the community, but it's the basis of keeping pubs profitable, men's mental health at the very least manageable and communities caring for one another. We've all heard the phrases “take care of the community and the community takes care of itself” and “it takes a village to raise a child”, well this is where the pub plays its part – as a creator and a keeper of community. So its imperative pubs don't perish post the pandemic. Check out our campaign to make pubs inclusive at https://pubssupportingpeople.com.au/ and nominate a publican and their pub which has made your life liveable in a year that got bloody tough for so many. The stats show us that suicide is up 15% on last year, with figures in SA alone saying the following:
Be a part of the movement to make pubs great again, and if your local's made you feel like you're part of their family and helped you with life, let us know via the Pubs Supporting People site. We'd love to shine a spotlight on your pub, celebrate with a community “longest table event” in pubs across the State and Nation this summer and support men suffering from mental health problems in the process. We've even built the solution. Check out the A.D.A.P.T. Mental Health Program on this site's home page. Pub Life for our brothers and sisters in the UK has never been tougher. Under the COVID-19 restrictions it looks as though 1 in 4 will close by this Christmas. If you’re a publican in Australia how has COVID affected you? Will your pub still be open by the end of the year? Let us know your challenges if you’re having any. Get in touch and we'll do our best to get more people your way. #makepubsgreatagain #makethepubgreatagain More on the story here: https://youtu.be/fP_Hxsz0NgU |
